Beach trips are fun and healthy activities to share with your pup, but make sure your furry pal has all of his vaccinations up-to-date and is leashed before heading out.

Ocean Beach in northern San Diego hosts one of the most beloved dog beaches. Beginning the day after Labor Day until June 15th, off-leash areas can be found here for dogs to roam free and play without worry from September through June 15.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach (OB) is one of San Diego's charming neighborhoods and an ideal choice for visitors seeking a laidback beachy atmosphere on their world class vacation. Offering sandy shores, seaside bars and restaurants as well as local businesses that support small business owners OB is ideal for experiencing all that the California coast has to offer!

There is ample sand and beach space at Dog Beach San Diego, making it one of the most popular dog beaches. Dogs may go off-leash during certain hours during winter (until 4pm), or 9am during summer.

Bring all sizes of dogs – from the smallest to the largest! There is also a self-service dog wash close by to help your pup remain clean. Just be sure to bring along their leash and make sure they behave around people and other animals.

Del Mar

Del Mar Beach town is a favorite among locals looking for an enjoyable place to spend their days. Dogs are welcome at most beaches throughout most of the year – particularly Fiesta Island which juts into Mission Bay and attracts huge crowds during summer months as people pull their cars onto its beach and relax for hours floating on water.

North Beach – commonly referred to by locals as "Dog Beach" – provides an ideal option for those seeking less-crowded alternatives. From September 15 through June 15, this section of North Beach allows pets without leashes from 29th Street up until its border with Solana Beach.

Pack a picnic and relax on the sand with your furry companion before exploring all of the nearby pet-friendly restaurants and shops!

San Elijo Beach

San Elijo Beach in Cardiff-by-the Sea, California, is an exceptional state beach with dog friendly conditions and offers camping and swimming services as well as consistent waves with kelp forests to dampen currents for optimal surfing conditions. However, weekends and public holidays may become quite busy at San Elijo.

This wide and sandy beach offers ample room for dogs to run freely, making it one of the first officially leash-free beaches in the country without hourly restrictions.

Make sure your dog's vaccinations are up-to-date before taking them to the beach, and make sure that they remain on a short leash at all times. Be sure to clean up after them, so the beach remains enjoyable for others as well as yourself. Avoid giving your pup seaweed, as this could potentially be harmful and lead to intestinal blockages in some cases.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay, situated in the heart of San Diego, is one of the nation's largest manmade aquatic parks. Home to attractions such as SeaWorld San Diego and Belmont Park – not to mention numerous restaurants, bars and shops – Mission Bay's eastern portion features channels and islands which attract wind surfers and water skiers.

Ocean Beach allows dogs on leashes no longer than 6 feet during certain hours, with ideal times being after 4pm in winter or before 9am during summer when there tend to be less people around.

South Mission Beach offers many pet-friendly vacation rentals and provides access to dogs at all times on Ocean Front Walk as well as specific hours on beachfront areas; additionally, this area features many lifeguard stations.
